International travelers arriving in the United States on United Airlines flights this week will be asked to voluntarily provide data at check-in for contact-tracing efforts.
At check-in, passengers will be asked to provide their email address, phone number and address of where they are staying to the airline. In the event that an infectious passenger is found to have traveled on a flight, the CDC will have immediate access to the data to aid in contact-tracing. The program will begin with only international flights this week before expanding to all United Airlines flights in the next few weeks.
While United Airlines is the first major U.S. carrier to announce this initiative on all flights, Delta has also begun a similar procedure this week for their international flights arriving in the U.S. as well.
